Confusion on Free Pricing and Fair Use Guidelines

Hello everyone, I wish to create a website for my university’s game development club and would like to know whether it would violate the Fair use Guidelines. I plan to have links to games our club has made which are all free and published on Itch.io. Would this “Media hosting for hot-linking” or any other rules?

Most importantly, we have no budget at all and wish to stay completely free. I plan on using the Hobby plan but am confused on how “free” it is. Suppose we exceed our limit for edge functions, will we begin to be charged or will Vercel pause our website until next month? Our student organization is fearful of waking up one day to find a hefty bill exceeding anything we could possibly pay for.

I’m not an official voice of Vercel so take what I say with a grain of salt, but it doesn’t sound like anything you’re wanting to do would break any of the guidelines. With the Hobby plan there aren’t any billing cycles, so if you end up exceeding the limit somewhere you typically just have to wait the 30 days until you can use it again. You can find more information about the limits and usage of the Hobby plan here: Vercel Hobby Plan

I agree with Josh! Education and non-profit projects are are the perfect use case for the Hobby plan.

The simplest general guideline I can offer is Hobby is for projects where no one makes any money, and Pro is for project where someone does make money. But you can find the full details here: Fair use Guidelines
