Move project ownership from owner to member on hobby plan

The project is currently owned by someone else in the team, and I am the only other member of the team. Due to changes within our organization, we need to transfer the ownership to my account. However, the ownership transfer button is currently disabled, preventing us from making the change ourselves.

PS. We are using the hobby plan.

Hi @yared04, welcome to the Vercel Community!

The Hobby plan is meant for individual use that’s why the transfer team feature might not be available for you. Can you ask the owner to leave the team? That might be a workaround.

Hey there, thanks for the quick reply

Isn’t there a risk of the whole project being lost if the owner leaves the team, as I am currently just a member and not an owner?

Hi @yared04, I’ll hand this over to the Trust and Safety team. I’ll update you as soon as I hear back something.

Hey @yared04. When transferring a project, you need to be an owner of the team you’re transferring from, and belong to the team you’re transferring to.

Can you confirm whether or not the current owner of the team is able to see the Transfer button? They may only have the ability to transfer to their own Hobby team, but they should be able to see the button at least.

Yes, they can see the transfer button.

That’s good news! In that case there are a couple of ways you could get the project moved to your own Hobby team.

  • Option 1: The team owner can make you an owner as well. Then you can transfer the project. Afterward they can downgrade you to a regular team member again if needed.
  • Option 2: The team owner can make you an owner of the team and then leave the team, turning it over to you entirely. This option would only make sense if you actually intend to take ownership of all projects that belong to the team. (This is essentially the scenario Anshuman described above)
  • Option 3: You could set up a duplicate project on your Hobby team and remove the original from the other team. It won’t work for a private repo owned by a Git organization, so you’d need to personally own the repo. This option is a bit fussy and wouldn’t be my first choice.
